“Nokia’s licensing business has been in the news over the last few months after Apple agreed to pay the company €1.7 billion (~$2 billion) upfront to settle outstanding patent licensing disputes. Although patent royalties have accounted for a very small portion of Nokia’s overall revenues historically, IP licensing revenues have very high margins, making them important to the company at a time when the broader wireless infrastructure market is going through a downturn.
